The Cayos Cochinos are a group of islands that is formed by two small islands (15 ° 58′18.99 ″ N86 ° 28′31.34 ″ W) (Cayo Menor and Cayo Grande) and 13 smaller cays of coral origin located 30 kilometers to the northeast from La Ceiba on the north coast of Honduras. Although geographically they belong to the department of Islas de la Bahía and are part of the municipality of Roatán. The population was 108 at the 2001 census. The total land area measures about 2 km².

The islands are a protected marine area and are managed by the Honduran Foundation for Coral Reefs. The coral reef in this case is part of the second largest coral reef in the world, known as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. There is a scientific research station on Cayo Menor, the smaller of the two main islands in the system.

Established as a key area of the Mesoamerican Reef System, the Keys and the surrounding waters were declared a marine reserve in 1994, with the help of the Smithsonian Institution, in order to protect all marine and terrestrial flora and fauna in an area of 460 km ² threatened by pollution, indiscriminate fishing and climate change.1 The reserve stretches eight kilometers in all directions.2 Laws prohibit all types of commercial fishing, nets and traps within the marine park.

Since 1994, the Smithsonian Institution, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Honduran Foundation for Coral Reefs, Operation Wallacea and other non-profit organizations have helped preserve the natural beauty of the area.

The archipelago is known for being the setting on which the survival reality Survivors: Lost in Honduras is filmed. Among others, the Mexican version of “Survivor” was also recorded in its fourth season entitled “La Isla, El Reality 2015”.
